Dr. Lee Nguyen Appointed to Board of Pharmacy Specialties’ Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Specialty Council

Dr. Lee Nguyen, health sciences associate clinical professor, has been appointed to the Board of Pharmacy Specialties’ Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Specialty Council for the 2024-2026 term.

The Board of Pharmacy Specialties  (BPS) is a division of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) that was created to certify pharmacy professionals within certain specializations and establish standards for the board certification of pharmacists.

According to their website, “BPS Specialty Councils are responsible for developing standards and requirements for certification and recertification of pharmacists in the specialty area for approval by the BPS Board of Directors; participating in the examination development process by reviewing and approving examination items and assembled forms of the certification examination; and reviewing and approving professional development programs for the recertification of pharmacist specialists.”

Members of the Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Specialty Council, specifically, help to oversee the board certification of pharmacists whose research and/or practice is dedicated to the study and treatment of infectious diseases. They are responsible for reviewing, editing, and approving exam materials, among other duties.

Dr. Nguyen explained that his own responsibilities as an Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Specialty Council member will include advising BPS on pharmacist certification and helping to build programs that measure the credentials of potential board-certified specialists.

Starting on January 1, 2024, Dr. Nguyen will begin his term. During this time, he shared that he “hopes to expand the examination test bank with evidence-based questions that clinicians should know as part of clinical practice.”

Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Specialty Council membership is a volunteer position. Dr. Nguyen was chosen to serve on the Specialty Council for his role as a leader in the pharmacy space and living example of collaboration, guidance, and service.

“Becoming a Specialty Council member is a great honor,” Dr. Nguyen said. “I feel grateful for being selected to help continue the rigor and excellence associated with BPS. This appointment is an opportunity for me to give back to BPS as well as ensure that future exam questions include up-to-date and quality questions that are reflective of pharmacy practice.”
