UCI School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences Announces 2023 Undergraduate Achievement Award Winners

The UCI School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences has recognized Catherine Choi, Yadhira Garcia, Christine Wei, and Cindy Wong for their excellence in academics, research, and service to the school and UCI campus with the 2023 Undergraduate Achievement Awards.

Each awardee will receive a $500 department scholarship provided by Founding Dean Jan Hirsch. Numerous worthy nominees were submitted, and the faculty-led Student Affairs Committee had a difficult time selection only four awardees.  Congratulations to all our nominees and award recipients!

Catherine Choi has been working in the Schriner lab performing research on extending the lifespan of yeast and helping the lab prepare a manuscript for publication. Catherine participated in the UCI Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program and the Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

She was also involved in the COPE Health Scholars Program, where she volunteered over 300 hours during the pandemic at Kaiser Permanente in Irvine. When not in the lab or at the hospital, Catherine participated in the Campuswide Honors Collegium, worked as a Learning Assistant for Organic Chemistry, Physiology, and Public Speaking, and served as a participant in the UCI Measuring Undergraduate Success Trajectories project. After graduating with her undergraduate degree in pharmaceutical sciences from UCI, she aims to attend the Accelerated BS in Nursing program at Concordia University.

Yadhira Garcia has been working in the Albrecht lab where she is researching osteoporosis. Yadhira participated in the UCI Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program and presented at the UROP Symposium, where she was a Project Pitch Challenge finalist. She has supported the UCI School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences Student Affairs Office through her service as a Seminar Assistant for the PHRMSCI 1 course, including the PharmSci Catalyst section of the course for minoritized PharmSci freshman and transfer students.

Yadhira also works for the Division of Career Pathways where she was chosen to attend the Randy Lewis All-University Leadership Conference. After graduating, she plans on enrolling in the UCI Pharmacological Sciences PhD program to continue her research on drug discovery and represent first generation students and Latinas in research.

Christine Wei was involved in the UCI Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program in two laboratories: the Zhao lab and the Haun lab. Christine participated in the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates at Johns Hopkins University researching cancer vaccine development, where she was awarded the Hopkins C.A.R.E.S. scholarship for excellence in research.

Christine has presented her research at conferences and coauthored three publications, one for which she is first author. Additionally, she has been awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship to fund her graduate studies. Outside the lab, Christine served as a Learning Assistant for General Chemistry courses, involved in the PharmSci Mentoring Program and the BioSci International Students Association, and an ambassador for UROP. Christine plans to enroll in the Biomedical Engineering PhD program at Johns Hopkins University this Fall.

Cindy Wong worked on two projects in the Civelli lab related to pain sensitivity and morphine tolerance. Cindy participated in the UCI Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), where she presented her research, and the UCI School of Biological Sciences Excellence in Research Program, where her research was published.

Additionally, Cindy participated in the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates at UC Berkeley, which allowed her the opportunity to present at the Society for Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans and the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists Conferences. She also served as a Learning Assistant for the Organic Chemistry courses.

After graduating with her undergraduate degree in pharmaceutical sciences from UCI this spring, she plans to continue in the Pharmacological Sciences PhD Program at UCI.
