Shawn Griffin Joins UC Irvine as Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor

In early July, the UC Irvine School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences announced Shawn Griffin as a new faculty member serving in the role of Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor.

“We are very honored to have Dr. Griffin joining us as a clinical faculty at UCI School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences,” said Alex Chan, Founding Chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy Practice. “Dr. Griffin comes with a wealth of clinical experience in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular therapies.

“His expertise will contribute to hematology, oncology and immunology courses within the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum. He will also be working closely with providers of the hematopoietic stem cell transplant service at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center to develop innovative research and pharmacy services.”

Griffin is a Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist and prior to joining UCI, he worked as an oncology pharmacist and clinical pharmacist in hematology, stem cell transplant, and immune cell therapy at the Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In talking about joining UCI, Griffin said: “I know firsthand the positive role an oncology pharmacist can play in optimizing health outcomes. I am excited to share and expand upon this experience at such an innovative and collaborative institution.”

Previously, Griffin also held an adjunct faculty appointment at the Purdue College of Pharmacy, where he taught the Oncology Integrated Pharmacotherapy Course. Griffin served as a preceptor for fourth-year pharmacy students, PGY1 Residents, and PGY2 Residents.

Griffin received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Boston College, his PharmD from the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and completed a PGY1 and PGY2 Residency in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital.

During his time in Indiana, Griffin founded the Pharmacy Internship Program at Indiana University Health and served as the Intern Research Project Coordinator. He was a member of the Indiana University Institutional Review Board and a state-wide Indiana University Health Chemotherapy Safety and Anticoagulation Committees member.

Griffin is an active participant in the Pharmacy Special Interest Group within the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy and is an active member of the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association, where he serves on the Practice Outcomes and Professional Benchmarking Committee. His research interests include the dosing of medications in obesity, leukemia induction regimens, graft versus host disease, and supportive care.
