High school students intern in cancer labs during the summer

The UCI Cancer Research Institute Youth Science Fellowship Program sponsors a select group of high school students to work in a Cancer Research Lab for 6 weeks during the summer. The overall goal of the program is to build the pipeline for the next generation of cancer researchers.

A handful of high school students interned in a variety of PharmSci labs including the Benavente Lab, Blumberg Lab, Goulding LabKwon Lab, Luptak Lab, Prescher Lab, and Zhao Lab, where they carried out bench work on research projects under the guidance of faculty and graduate students. They also attended weekly meetings where they received advice on careers and the college admissions process.

On the last day of the program, friends and family were invited to a celebration to meet the program mentors and to learn more about the students’ research through presentations.
