Dr. Yael Marks, Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor, Joins UC Irvine School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences

Dr. Yael Marks, health sciences assistant clinical professor, has joined the UC Irvine School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Dr. Marks earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology (with a focus in behavioral and cognitive neuroscience) from the University of Florida. She later earned her Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University of Florida as well.

“Throughout pharmacy school, I was involved in several research projects focusing on underserved populations and was selected as a pharmacy intern for a student-run free clinic,” she said. “Through these experiences, I developed an interest in using pharmacy skills to reduce health disparities and focus on work that contributes to health equity.”

Dr. Marks then completed a post-graduate Global Health Fellowship in Buffalo, NY, which gave her the opportunity to provide healthcare to underserved populations in the Dominican Republic, Belize, and Jamaica. She conducted research, taught pharmacy students, and provided clinical services in an ambulatory care clinic that served a majority refugee population. During the fellowship, she also completed an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Public Health.

At UCI, Dr. Marks will continue her work in ambulatory care. In particular, her clinical practice will serve patients with hypertension and diabetes, and her research will center on underserved populations and global health within an ambulatory care context.

“I look forward to providing clinical services to patients at a Federally Qualified Health Center with UCI Health,” Dr. Marks stated. “My goal is to use research as a method to develop interventions that contribute to health equity in both national and global settings.”

Dr. Marks is currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Health from the University at Buffalo. She speaks fluent Spanish and conversational American Sign Language and shared that she enjoys playing guitar and traveling.

She is looking forward to collaborating with her fellow UCI School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty members and sharing her expertise with the next generation of pharmacists.

“I wanted to join UCI because it offered an incredible opportunity to join a new pharmacy school, providing endless educational opportunities for students and shaping the future of the pharmacy profession,” she said. “Everyone I have met at UCI is highly motivated and excited about creating a program that will set students up for success and become future leaders in the pharmacy world.”
