Presentation synopsis:
Systemic Corticosteroids are a cornerstone of treatment during acute exacerbations of COPD. Evidence-based provision of corticosteroids reduce the risk of treatment failure in acute COPD yet corticosteroids as a class are associated with myriad adverse effects. In this seminar, attendees will learn the guideline-recommended care of patients with COPD, become acquainted with the risks and benefits of systemic corticosteroids in acute exacerbations of COPD, and identify current gaps in the COPDresearch landscape.
Speaker bio:
Herman Johannesmeyer, PharmD, BCPS, is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Marshall B. Ketchum University. His clinical interests are multi-faceted and include internal medicine, cardiology, and infectious diseases. Dr. Johannesmeyer’s research interests include corticosteroid optimization in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the effects of antibiotic timing on clinical outcomes.
