Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Student Awarded a fellowship from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

Congratulations to Milad Riazifar!

 

Milad is a third year graduate student in the Pharm Sci Concentration of the Pharmacological Sciences PhD program, working in Dr. Weian Zhao's lab. He has been awarded a prestigious fellowship from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS/NIH). The objective of the training program is to prepare qualified individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation to be able to assume leadership roles in the area of biomedical, behavioral and clinical research and comes with financial support for one year, with the possibility for renewal for an additional year.

Two Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Students are Awarded the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program!

Congratulations to Claire Chen & Nathan Lim!

 

Nathan is a first year graduate student in the MCP program and Claire is a second year graduate student in the Pharm Sci Concentration of the Pharmacological Sciences PhD program. Both have been awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF-GRFP), which is an annual grant awarded to approximately 2,000 doctoral-level students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines at US institutions. The fellowship period is 5 years and provides a generous honorarium and annual stipend for 3 years.

Congratulations to Ali Alhoshani!

 

Ali is the first graduate of the Pharm Sci concentration of the Pharmacological Sciences PhD program. He will begin his position as Professor in the College of Pharmacy at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia in January, 2015. Ali completed his research in Dr. Cocco's lab with a thesis titled, “Understanding the interaction mechanism of Nogo-66 with Nogo receptor and membrane phosphocholine.”

Pharm Sci Associate Professor, Dr. Mobley, receives prestigious award from the National Science Foundation!

Congratulations to Dr. David Mobley, who recently received an NSF CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation! This is the NSF's most prestigious junior faculty award, and will provide five years of support to Dr. Mobley's research program, particularly to efforts on predicting solubility and other thermodynamic properties for small molecules in solution. New Pharm Sci Course, Life 101, is Featured in the OC Register!

 

Dr. Mahtab Jafari offered Pharm Sci 42: Life 101 for the first time last winter and plans to offer again during the Winter 2014 Quarter this year. She developed this course to help students find a balance outside of class and to begin making changes toward a healthier lifestyle. Congratulations to Randi Jimenez, who has been awarded a National Institutes of Health NRSA Predoctoral Fellowship. The first student to have entered UCI through PharmSci's MCP graduate gateway to have achieved this honor, Randi completed the MCP program in 2010 and chose Professor Luptak's group for her PhD research.

New Faculty Member Earns Award for Research

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is pleased to announce that one of our new faculty members, Professor Weian Zhao, has been selected as the recipient of a 2012 TR35 award for his creative research on stem cell sensors. Congratulations Dr. Steve Hanessian!

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is pleased to announce that our very own Steve Hanessian has been awarded the 2012 Richter Medicinal Chemistry Prize, awarded by the IUPAC. The prize is awarded to an internationally recognized scientist, preferably a medicinal chemist, whose activities or published accounts have made an outstanding contribution to the practice of medicinal chemistry or to an outstanding example of new drug discovery. The Prize will be presented to Steve in June 2012 at the ACS National Medicinal Chemistry Symposium at the University of Arizona, Tucson, USA, where he will also give a plenary lecture on his research.
