Dr. Mahtab Jafari Received the Paul Silverman Award in Science and Ethics

Dr. Mahtab Jafari, Professor and Equity Advisor at the UCI School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, received the Paul Silverman Award in Science and Ethics on June 6th as part of the UCI Ethics Center 2023 Tobis Day Conference and Annual Award Banquet.

During the awards banquet, Dr. Jafari made a presentation entitled, “Women’s Rights in Iran: From the Ancient Era to the Contemporary Woman’s Life Freedom Revolution”. In May, Dr. Jafari published a Viewpoint entitled, “Scientific Awakening: Violation of Human Rights of Academic Scholars and Healthcare Professionals in Iran” in the Journal of Health and Human Rights from Harvard University. The Viewpoint paper was written in collaboration with Dr. Parya Saberi, Associate Professor of Medicine at UC San Francisco.

The Paul Silverman Award in Science and Ethics is awarded yearly. It is named in honor of Dr. Paul H. Silverman, who was a member of UCI’s Department of Developmental and Cell Biology and worked to promote ethical practices in science.

The ceremony was held at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for National Academies of Sciences & Engineering. Prior to the presentation of the awards, the Ethics Center Tobis Day Conference included presentations on various ethics topics.

Dr. Jafari also served as the Chair of the Jerome Tobis Medal Award, which was given to Dr. Edith Eva Eger at the UCI Ethics Center ceremony. Earlier this year, Dr. Jafari received the UCI Womxn’s Outstanding Social Justice and Activist Award.
